Healthcare and Pollution in Ports

Right now, ports use primarily owner operators to move cargo in and out. Most O/Os are contracted by companies for each individual haul. Because of this independence, many O/Os have a challenging time with affordable health insurance.

Because of this, the Port of Long Beach has tacked on a Healthy Drivers Program to their Clean Truck Program. The port has set manpower to research different healthcare options and can help truckers with the sometimes daunting task. Staff can be reached at 800-985-8608.

The Clean Truck program is designed to decrease pollution by phasing out older model trucks. By October 1st, the 16,000 trucks that frequent the Port of Long Beach will be require to be newer than 1988. By 2012, trucks will be required to be 2007 or newer.

The ATA is challenging the program, saying that it directly reduces competition between companies and deals with cargo that leaves the state, which the ATA says, can only be governed by federal law.
