Gas vs. Diesel Trucks: Advantages and Disadvantages

Are you thinking about becoming an independent truck driver, or start your career as a lease owner operator? Well if your answer is yes, you know there are several aspects you must take into consideration. Some aspects to think about are the best companies, which one pays better, or which one offers the best benefits. Maybe the most important thing to consider right now is the kind of truck you will have to use: a diesel engine or gasoline engine. As you know, the price of the fuel has been greatly affected by factors like wars, natural disasters and others. Here, you will find some information about the advantages and disadvantages of each, perhaps this information can help you to make a good decision.

Some years ago, diesel engines were very noisy and smelly, but today are much more refined. You also have to consider for what purpose you want the truck. There are difference in noise and vibration levels for each one. Diesel trucks are much noisier than gas trucks, despite the new technological advances in the motors. A recent study made with two Ford trucks, one equipped with a 5.4L V-8 and the other with a new Powerstroke 6.0L diesel V-8, showed that diesels are not that far behind. The diesel is easily perceptible even when the gas is still running. Even under low acceleration, diesel is noisy, but when they stopped the difference was very little even accelerating on the road. About the fuel economy you must know that diesel has more energy density than gasoline, because diesel engines uses the more efficient fuel injection method (directly in the cylinder), compared with gasoline. Diesel produces more miles per gallon and this can be important, particularly if you have to drive a lot of miles.

Is more expensive to maintain a diesel engine than a gasoline engine; this because diesel engines need more oil than gasoline engines. The typical gas engine works 125,000 miles before it needs an overhaul while the diesel engine can continue for three times more miles. In cold weather, a person that has a diesel engine knows that turning-on these machines in these temperatures is very difficult. Today, modern diesel engines are designed to keep the temperature when the truck is parked in cold conditions. A diesel engine has more emissions than a gasoline engine because they have more oxides of nitrogen than gasoline. The costs of fuels vary;  diesel is easier to refine; it takes less time to get the final product from petroleum and this is why diesel is much cheaper than gasoline.

The availability changes for the different fuels. The lack of diesel availability is the main reason why people do not choose this kind of vehicles. As an important side note, just 2% of the nation's cars are diesels. Manufacturers say that they would build more vehicles of this type if people would buy them. Buyers say that they would purchase this type of cars if more fuel stations were distributing diesel. Finally, fuel companies say that they would supply more diesel, if consumers asked for it. If you are still thinking about buying your own truck or leasing one, you must consider all these aspects showed in this article, maybe they can help you to take the best decision.
