When you are on the road going home, work or other, you see a lot of trucks on the highway hauling anything from automobiles to food products. Every truck you see is driven by the most qualified drivers of the nation. To drive one of these machines is not an easy job nor is it to get the CDL. There are several driving and training schools where people can get all the tools needed to become truck drivers. Most people have never thought about that. In the training program, students learn to drive these big machines on narrow streets and on the highways. They also learn to scrutinize trucks and the freight to make sure they comply with the transport regulations. Some schools offer just a limited time of driving training, however, doing one of these programs does not necessarily guarantee a job. Some states oblige students to finish a basic truck driving training class before they issue their CDL. The Professional Truck Driver Institute (PTDI) certifies the driver training courses that meet industry standards for truck driving schools, and the Federal Highway Administration sets the guidelines for preparing tractor-trailer drivers.
Sometimes the training given to the students is informal and consists of a few hours of driving training, or in other cases a few weeks (2-3). The new drivers also make routes with experienced drivers and obtain additional training to drive special trucks or to handle hazardous materials. Most of the companies give the new drivers a little classroom session, where they learn about general duties, operations, policies, to fill out delivery forms and company awards. They also provide guidance on the different kinds of products the company carries. The job does not finish there; drivers also have to be brought up to date with the best technology that their companies provide them to do the best job and offer the best service they can. Today, almost all the trucking companies in the USA are equipped with the latest technology, with systems like GPS (Global Positioning System), Qualcomm System and others. These tools help the drivers get information and instructions from their company's main office to take the load on the safest way.
Drivers should also have various precautions with the truck before taking off from the terminal or warehouse. They check the fuel level and oil, scrutinize the trucks to make sure everything is working properly, the brakes, windshield wipers and the lights. There should be an inspection of the fire extinguisher, flares and other safety equipment. They also adjust the mirrors and they ensure that the cargo is secure. If the equipment is not working, missing or improperly loaded to the dispatcher, they make sure that it is made properly. Truck drivers must have a driver's license issued by the state in which they live. To drive a truck, tractor or a trailer of more than 26,000 pounds they also must have a CDL (Commercial Driver License), and this is not an easy task. To qualify for a CDL, applicants must pass a written test on rules and regulations and then demonstrate that they can operate a commercial truck safely, as well as a drug test of the DOT (Department of Transportation of the US). If you want to get a CDL, you have to go to a driving school, but usually some companies offer you the training as a part of the job.
